Who doesn’t love a thriller?

Let’s start with the positives.

After failing to open the scoring in any of their previous six home games, the Philadelphia Flyers struck first on Thursday night. Travis Konecny lit the lamp 1:18 into the contest, and he was quickly followed by Scott Laughton, who netted his fifth of the year before six minutes had passed.

Travis Sanheim received top-four minutes. Shayne Gostisbehere recorded a goal, the game-winner, and an assist. Philly won over 60% of the face-offs and only took two penalties. Brian Elliott stopped every shot he faced.

Unfortunately, there were some negatives.

Despite getting out to an early 2-0 lead, they had to claw back from a 4-2 deficit after the Coyotes took control on the strength of a power play goal in the first, and a pair of short-handed tallies on the same Flyers power play in the second period. There was also an even strength goal thrown in there for good measure.

Arizona’s first period goal with the man-advantage marked the ninth consecutive game in which the orange and black allowed a power play goal. Philadelphia has allowed at least one power play goal in 13 of 16 games this season. Oh, and Calvin Pickard allowed four goals on 18 shots before being pulled prior to the seven-minute mark in the second.

But all’s well that ends well, and the Flyers fought back, scoring three unanswered, including a beautiful Dale Weise breakaway goal, his first of the year, to send the game to overtime, where Ghost would send everyone home happy, with a little help from Michael Grabner.
