PHILADELPHIA, PA – AUGUST 11: Lane Johnson
The Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t avoid injuries if they tried at this point.
A short week in the NFL is tough to deal with for these players, especially if you play for the Philadelphia Eagles. Something must be in the water at the Nova Care Complex because these guys just can’t seem to stay healthy. There are some notable names on the injury report this week, but none are shocking. Except for the addition of Lane Johnson on Thursday.
The veteran right tackle has apparently been dealing with an ankle injury, and now he is left questionable for Thursday Night Football against the New York Giants. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Johnson has a high-ankle sprain and has had it for quite some time now.
The Eagles and Johnson will test everything out during pregame warmups, but it seems as though they are leaning towards him not playing. Maybe this injury gives everybody a bit of clarity as Johnson has definitely not been playing his best stretch of football throughout the first five weeks of the season. His best bet might be to sit out during the short week.
Next Man Up
We know who’s up next behind Johnson. If he cannot play, then we get to see Halapulivaati Vaitai make his starting debut in 2018. As we all know, Vaitai played left tackle for the Eagles last season when Jason Peters went down with his season-ending injury. While he did serve the Eagles quite well, he might’ve lost that juju after the Super Bowl win.
Vaitai’s preseason performance wasn’t exactly Super Bowl worthy. He struggled, a lot. And since the Eagles offensive line is already struggling a ton even with Johnson in, it really can get worse on Thursday night. Hopefully, Carson Wentz protects himself as much as he can because it could be yet, another long night for the franchise quarterback in the pocket once again.
