Enyel De Los Santos Impresses in Major League Debut

The Phillies acquired Enyel De Los Santos back in December from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Freddy Galvis. Sip that in and swirl it around your mouth for a moment. Now watch this:

Tasty.

If you happen to be a Freddy Galvis truther, that’s fine. Scott Kingery and JP Crawford have each made me miss his defense at times this season, too, but it’s probably worth pointing out that Galvis possesses a .626 OPS this season, which is ahead of only *cough* Kingery *cough* among qualified National League shortstops.

As for De Los Santos, I have no idea what will ultimately become of him during his time with the Phillies, but the initial returns appear favorable. The 22-year-old, who was slated to start the Triple-A All-Star Game tomorrow, instead mowed through a hapless Mets lineup over six innings in his Major League debut. In a somewhat surprising move, Gabe Kapler left him in to start the seventh, but he was unable to finish the inning after an Ahmed Rosario triple knocked him out of the game.

Still, the performance was good enough to earn him his first Major League win in a game that could vault the Phillies into sole possession of first place in the NL East. No big deal.

Update: The Braves lost. The Phillies are alone atop the NL East. How about that shit?

His final line: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K

De Los Santos threw 58 of his 94 pitches for strikes, effectively relying on his fastball that, according to PITCHf/x data, sat in the low to mid-90s and topped out at 97.8 mph. He threw 64 fastballs to efficiently and aggressively attack Mets hitters, throwing no more than 17 pitches in any inning. Five of his six strikeouts came via the fastball.

After the game, De Los Santos was optioned back to Triple-A with Vince Velasquez set to make his return from the disabled list for tomorrow’s series finale at Citi Field. While his short-term future remains uncertain with no obvious spot in the rotation available, it’s still hard to imagine that tonight will mark the last time we see him take the ball for the Phillies this season.
