Phillies MLR 5/14/18: Ramon Rosso strikes out 11 batters

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 5/14/18

Today’s Probables:

LHV: Drew Anderson

CLR: GM1 Adonis Medina, GM2 Connor Seabold
LWD: Will Stewart

Reading 10, Portland 7

JoJo Romero – 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, WP, HBP, 5 GB, 1 FB
Zach Coppola – 0 for 1, 2 R, 3 BB, K, CS
Malquin Canelo – 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Damek Tomscha – 2 for 3, HR, 3 RBI, K
Kyle Martin – 0 for 2, R, BB, K, HBP
Zach Green – 1 for 3, RBI, BB, K
Cornelius Randolph – 2 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Jan Hernandez – 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K

JoJo Romero can’t get out of this unusual command issue he is having this early season. He has allowed 19 walks in 36.2 innings this season (to go along with his 43 hits and 6.38 ERA). Romero doesn’t seem to be the guy who cruised through Lakewood and Clearwater in 2017. Thankfully, he had plenty of offense behind him this outing. Reading got huge homeruns from Malquin Canelo (5), Damek Tomscha (6) and Jan Hernandez (2). Malquin Canelo has been the lucky recipient of the “Reading Effect” this season. His line at home is .318/382/.652 with 4 homers, as opposed to his .208/.276/.302 line away from First Energy Stadium. Also of note, Victor Arano pitched a rehab inning and gave up 1 run and struck out 2 batters. Kyle Martin was hit by a pitch and had to be removed from the game. It will be interesting to see if this injury is serious and will keep him out long-term. It could lead to an early promotion for Darick Hall or Austin Listi from Clearwater.

Clearwater, Palm Beach (ppd due to rain)

Lakewood 5, West Virginia 2 (GM1 of DH, 7 innings)
West Virginia 2, Lakewood 1 (GM2 of DH, 7 innings, makeup of 5/13 ppd)

David Parkinson – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, 4 GB, 4 FB
Ramon Rosso – 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 11 K, 1 GB, 2 FB
Jake Scheiner – 4 for 7, R, SB, HBP
Daniel Brito – 2 for 6, RBI, BB
Nick Maton – 1 for 4, RBI, K
Quincy Nieporte – 3 for 6, 2B (fielding error)
Gregori Rivero – 0 for 3, K
Josh Stephen – 1 for 6
Danny Mayer – 0 for 6, 3 K
Dalton Guthrie – 4 for 6, 3 R, 2 2B, HR, 2 K
Kevin Markham – 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB
Rodolfo Duran – 0 for 3, 2 K
Yahir Gurrola – 0 for 3, K

Both starting pitchers for the BlueClaws pitched well, but Ramon Rosso just continues to prove that he is just too good for this league (Baseball Prospectus re-iterated this from their Monday Morning 10 Pack yesterday). He has 52 strikeouts, which ranks 5th among domestic minor leagues. Lakewood got homers from Markham (2) and Guthrie (2) in separate games. After a 4-hit day, Jake Scheiner’s line is up to .282/.338/.468 with 4 HR and 3 RBI. While he is primarily a third basemen, he has now played 4 games in left-field (including the 1st game of the DH last night).
